This protest was going on (9:00 AM) while I was on my way to my art history class at the Bargello Museum on Via del Proconsolo (which just happens to be the building right beside the protest). Basically some people (mostly elderly) were (still are) upset with the contruction workers & company that are repaving the road, as they are removing & destroying the cobblestone road that is centuries old to repave it with asphalt. On top of that it is said initially that the citizens where promised that the cobblestones would be numbered, carefully removed & documented. But all of this wasn’t being done hence their frustration.
If you look closely in the 1st picture you'll see people setting underneath one of the trackers preventing the construction workers from working. The old lady in the far right of the second picture made it a point to call out to me while I was walking pass her. She had so much passion and sorrow in her voice when she was explaining to me (in english) what was happening.
After a couple of hours, on break from my history class I returned and it seemed like the police removed the persons obstructing the construction & the workers returned to work. The police behind the barricade in the last picture seem to be Italian ‘swat’(?) as they are dressed a bit less casual then the other other cops across the street + they have helmets attached to the side of their belt.
